Persuasion comes about either through the character ( êthos) of the speaker, the emotional state ( pathos) of the hearer, or the argument ( logos ) itself. WebSocrates thus suggests that, whatever knowledge is, it must have the character of a hexis in requiring the effort of concentrating or paying attention. A hexis is an active condition, a state in which something must actively hold itself, and that is what Aristotle says a moral virtue is.
